Forever Young “A NEW YOU” MAKEOVER Winner!!!
Fitness on-the-go!
By Nancy Jo Eckerson
We are in month three of Helen Dinero’s makeover, and it is obvious that Helen is shining from the inside-out these days.
Helen’s exuberance for life has been manifested in the blessing of being grandma to her first grandson. She is aglow with the plans for her journey to Nevada to welcome his arrival - along with her newfound health.
Helen was concerned at first. “What will happen with my makeover schedule when the baby comes? I have promised to go and help care for the family for three weeks. What if I ruin all my progress?”
Well, let’s look back to the foundational concept from our makeover physician, Dr. David Kurss, of the Women’s Wellness Center of WNY, “Our number one goal is to encourage people to be happy with who they are and what they are achieving. Being mentally prepared for this three-week journey will ensure Helen’s happiness and her ability to stay with the program, even while away from home. My suggestion for Helen, and anyone who will be traveling, is to pack your sneakers and the right attitude.”
Before you pack even one suitcase, take a moment to assess what you truly want to achieve. If feeling good is your goal, then a vacation, employing good nutritional choices and lots of activity, will enhance the rest, relaxation and restoration of your mind and body.
“And these days, even if your travel is for business, there is ample opportunity to exercise and eat properly,” said Dr. Kurss. Most hotels have great exercise facilities to accommodate guests. Cruise ships offer daily opportunities for physical activity. Most cities have a fitness center and most restaurants have a salad bar or a healthy choice menu.
If your home away from home doesn’t have a fitness center, make up your own routine. It’s easy. There are even travel weights available that pack flat. You simply fill them with water when you want to work out. Here is a sample routine that requires you to bring only a jump rope.
• Stretching, leg lifts, bending, side stretch: 5 minutes.
• Do your floor work, or resistance training, such as sit-ups,
push-ups, other abdominal exercises: 10 minutes.
• Cardio-vascular work, jump rope: 10 minutes.
• Cool down with stretching or walking until your normal heart
rate returns: 5 minutes.
Most importantly, don’t abandon your meditations and prayer work while away. Walk on the beach, in the woods or enjoy mountain vistas. Meditate and relax. Changing your surroundings allows you to re-assess life’s journey.
Upon her return to the Women’s Wellness Center, Helen will undergo a second laser treatment to eradicate the wrinkles around her mouth. “I’m really looking forward to seeing a difference,” said Helen.
“We are very proud of our Gemini Laser Treatment program,” said Dr. Kurss. “It’s one of the best forms of laser because the treatments are efficient and comfortable. And, for hair removal, Gemini Laser treatments are more time efficient and noted for their pinpoint accuracy.
For instance, instead of the normal 3040 minutes, this fantastic system can take only 15 minutes to initially treat an average case of hair removal on a man’s back.” Hair removal is permanent, but may take several treatments to completely eradicate a particular area because hair growth occurs in stages. Often a follicle is below the surface, in the dormant stage, and will appear later. Laser removes hairs that are visible in the growth stage.
“Patients who have undergone facial hair removal for upper lips or chin hair have expressed great pleasure now that their daily shaving or plucking routines have been reduced,” said Dr. Kurss. “Bikini partial hair removal around the bikini lines, or Brazilian total hair removal in the pubic areas, is a popular use of laser these days.”
What does laser do? “Laser light destroys a hair follicle, the birthplace of a hair, or in the case of spider vein removal, laser causes the blood vessels to shrivel,” said Dr. Kurss.
How painful is it? “I didn’t feel a thing on my first treatment,” said Helen. “Beth Ann Reisweber, also a Certified Laser Specialist, did my first treatment. She was very kind.”
Laser has been shown to be effective for the treatment of spider veins, hair removal, and also sun damage, wrinkles, acne and rosacea.
“Health is not just your heart function,” said Dr. Kurss. “Wellness is not confined purely to the health of internal organs. It is a healthy integration of mind and body. If a person feels good about themselves it enhances their overall wellness.”
And how about the cost of laser treatments? “For the next three months, if a client mentions this article, a special 50% discount on the first laser treatment will apply.”
Before Helen’s departure, she and Dr. Kurss started something new, Quantum Energy Biofeedback Therapy. Watch for more details about it in the next issue.

Dr. Kurss offers the following tips for travel:
|
• Avoid simple carbohydrates, highly processed foods and fattening
foods, but if the midnight buffet on the cruise ship is calling your
name, allow yourself small samplings of the myriad of chef’s
masterpieces. Atone for your indiscretions with an extra morning
exercise routine.
• Always ask for sauces and salad dressings on the side.
• Chew slowly and savor your food! It takes 20 minutes to
feel satiated.
• For the business traveler If your convention host does not offer
a healthy choice on the menu, simply request an alternate meal.
• If you are leaving for a one-night business trip, schedule your
departure for later in the morning, and maintain your morning
exercise schedule at home.
• Snack on fruits and veggies, when possible. Keep healthy snacks
handy, like raisins, nuts, trail mix and granola.
• Drink six to eight glasses of water a day. It’s a low calorie way to
feel full, and proper hydration can stave off headaches and prevent
bladder infections. Carry a water bottle and plan your H2O intake
around your travel schedule so you don’t get caught mid-flight
with your pants down, so to speak.
• Bring along protein bars to eat before or after workouts.
Powdered meal-replacement shakes are easy to transport, also. |

Helen's Progress
|
Exciting news! Congratulations are in order for Helen who is now the proud grandmother of her seventh grandchild, a handsome baby boy. Victor Mark Dinero was born on February 19, in Nevada. Helen’s new-found energy from this fantastic make-over will be put to the test as she cares for baby, mother and two-year-old sister, Olivia.
“My weight loss is not as much as I would like, but my fitness program is going great,” said Helen. “I can even lean against a rubber ball that is against a wall, and lower myself by bending my knees. I never thought I would be doing something like that. My trainer, Chuck, is excellent. He is very caring and attentive.”
“Helen is now ready to step up the cardio-vascular portion of her program,” said fitness trainer, Chuck Pelitera. “She’s more confident about exercising since she has mastered the machines and has made arrangements to accompany her son to his work-out facility. I’ve written out the entire exercise program, and the names of the particular machines. Helen is pleased that, with the help of the trainers in Nevada, she will be able to keep up her regimen and not lose all this progress.”
Chiropractor, Dr. Scott Beres, said, “I just completed Helen’s first comparison scan. It showed substantial neuro-muscular improvement and a more balanced spine. I expect with such a great amount of progress that there will be no regression in the three weeks Helen is gone. She will simply plateau, and we can resume her healing upon her return.”
“This month Dr. Kurss and I have spent our time working on planning ahead for this trip,” said Helen. “I will be buying the special foods, and taking the advice he has given me for being committed to my health and staying determined. I am sure this will all help me stick to my nutritional plan when I’m in Nevada.” |
