Buffalo’s Irish community has long been strong, so it’s no surprise that St. Patrick’s Day is practically a month-long celebration every March. Green-centric events pepper the calendar in locations throughout Western New York. Here’s a list of some Irish-themed good times.



Blessing of the Beers
March 2
Gene McCarthy’s Irish Pub holds the “Blessing of the Beers” at 6 p.m. Entry is $20 and funds will be raised for the Old First Ward Center.

Celtic Sale
March 6 and 11
Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, Urban Artisans presents a Celtic-themed sale of jewelry, art and other gifts. On March 6 the sale will be held at the Grant Street Gallery (216 Grant St.), and on the 11th it moves to the Sterling Place Tavern (1487 Hertel Ave.).

Shamrock Run
March 7
Get an early start at running off the beer and festive food from the holiday by joining fellow Buffalo residents for the annual Shamrock Run. The run begins in the Old First Ward at 62 Republic Street.

Natalie MacMaster
March 11
Step dancer and fiddler Natalie MacMaster has been energizing Buffalo audiences for years with her intense performances of Celtic music. The Canada native has shared the stage with stars such as Paul Simon and Faith Hill. 645-ARTS, www.ubcfa.org

Irish-American Cocktail Party
March 13
From 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. the Amherst Gaelic League, Inc. presents the 37th annual party at the Hearthstone Manor.

Finnegan’s Farewell
March 14
The Lancaster Opera House presents a chaotic Irish wake performed by the Lancaster Regional Players at the Hearthstone Manor.

The New Barleycorn
March 14
Two native Irishmen, John Delaney and Alec DeGabriele, join the Irish dancers from the Clann Na Cara School of Dance at the Fredonia Opera House.

16th Annual “Old Neighborhood” St. Patty’s Day Parade
March 14
Beginning at noon, the parade travels through the Old First Ward neighborhood, which holds some of Buffalo’s most beloved Irish establishments. The route begins at the Valley Community Center.

Buffalo St. Patrick’s Day Parade
March 14
The 68th annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is programmed each year by the United Irish American Association. Before the parade there will be a mass held at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral at 10:30 a.m. At 2 p.m. the parade will begin at Delaware and West Mohawk.

Celtic Thunder
March 31
This group of five male vocalists ranging in age from teens to middle-aged — all hailing from Ireland or Scotland — have mastered the sound of their Celtic heritage. They’ll show off these talents at Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo.
