Bingo Etiquette Mind Your Manners!
By Bill Harford
Like any game, especially one played with a large group of others, there are rules and etiquette involved in bingo. Good manners add to the fun for everyone, so pay close attention to these etiquette tips. They’re your guidebook for bingo enjoyment.
• Make sure to read the posted rules, since no two bingo halls are exactly the same.
• Many players believe staying quiet and listening intently is the single most important rule in the game. Sure, everyone loves to chat, but in most bingo halls, once the caller begins, the room gets quiet. Save the socializing for the start and end of the night.
• When playing at a new location for the first time, keep in mind that many veteran players may have a “lucky” seat. If you’ve taken someone’s spot, you might be asked to move.
• Some players repeat the numbers as they’re called. This can be quite annoying for your fellow bingo players.
• If you bring grandkids or other young children to a game, try to keep them quiet. You may even want to bring coloring books or other activities for them to enjoy.
• Don’t shoot the messenger! In other words, don’t blame the caller for bad numbers. Of course, you can always ask the caller to speak up or talk more slowly, but avoid yelling sarcastic or antagonistic comments. It’s not their fault.
• Before calling “bingo,” take a second to make sure you are correct. After all, this stops the flow of the game.
• If you are a winner, and ready to call “bingo,” call it in a loud and clear manner so you can make sure the caller hears you.
• Only smoke in designated areas, and respect the space of those who do not smoke.
• Make sure to mark your card carefully, and be attentive. Concentration is a key part of the game.
• Be a good winner. If you are lucky enough to win, don’t rub it in the face of the other players, and don’t knock anyone down on your way to claim the winnings.
• Don’t get too comfortable; in other words, don’t spread out your belongings and leave no space for others.
• The most important rule? Have fun. That’s what the game of bingo is all about.
