Victorian-Style Celebration
The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site is a Buffalo cultural landmark. The site, the very spot where Roosevelt took the oath of office as president of the United States, is also home to a holiday tradition — Victorian Christmas. The event, held over the course of several days, features a wide assortment of activities and treats, including a traditional Victorian celebration with dinner, dessert and entertainment.

Buffalo Blood
A local premiere for a play by native son A.R. Gurney is exciting news, especially when the show is put on by the masters at Studio Arena Theatre. Indian Blood, set in the 1940s, takes the audience back to a time when children were seen and not heard, and manners were of the utmost importance. It tells the story of a young boy attending Nichols School who uses his historical Indian bloodline as an excuse for crude drawings during class. Sounds like an involving trip to Buffalo’s past.

Loudon Calling
Singer Loudon Wainwright III is one of the most respected names in music, both for his dense back catalog and his familial connections. His son Rufus and daughter Martha are much-loved singers in their own right, while his daughter Lucy Roache will open his show at the Tralf on December 4. If Loudon’s music doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps his face does. He has appeared in everything from the film Knocked Up to the televison show M*A*S*H and Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator.

Babel, Part II
The second speaker in Just Buffalo and Hallwalls’ Babel literary series is Chilean author Ariel Dorfman. He visits town on December 7 for what is sure to be a fascinating discussion of his work, and its historical and personal significance. His best known creation is the play Death and the Maiden, which Roman Polanski turned into a 1994 film. Dorfman follows Turkish author Orhan Pamuk, and the series continues in March.
