Beechwood Residences: A 2007 Volunteer Option
Beechwood Continuing Care offers many meaningful volunteer opportunities for people of all ages from high school students to retirees, church groups and everyone in between. Beechwood residents participate in many different activities that volunteers could be a part of on a daily basis. In addition to assisting residents with activities such as bingo, cards or crafts, volunteers are also valuable friendly visitors who provide companionship and can assist residents with things such as letter writing or reading.
Beechwood’s gift shop is open several times a week and requires a friendly face to greet residents and their guests when looking for small toiletries or that little something special. For those who enjoy the outdoors, there is always gardening, landscaping or planting that can be done in the spring and summer months.
In conjunction with Beechwood’s resident-centered care initiative, Welcome Home, volunteers can also become a friend of the household.
“A friend of the household is someone who would come in and visit with the residents in a particular household, participate in activities with them, and really become a part of the family,” said Cheryl Wasson, director of marketing and fundraising. “Doing things with residents such as cooking, baking or even laundry can be very meaningful to the residents.”
Spiritual volunteers are also encouraged and anyone interested in those positions should contact Rev. Jim Weisz, Beechwood’s pastoral care director, at 504-1388. Volunteers spend anywhere from two hours a month, to a visit once a week at Becchwood’s various homes.
