Walking for Health in October
The Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo’s “Passport to Wellness; Walking to Health” program for adults over 50 are not just great ways to exercise and stay in shape. Supported by Forever Young, these walks are chances to see old friends, meet new ones and enjoy some of the most beautiful and historic sites in Western New York.
The first walk of the month is scheduled for October 5 at the Dr. Victor Reinstein Woods and Nature Preserve in Depew, followed by a walk one week later, October 12, at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo. Next is Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo (the Delaware-Delevan entrance) on October 19 and the rose garden at Delaware Park in Buffalo on October 26.
The moderately paced walks begin at 10 a.m. and last for about 45 minutes, with a short (one mile) and long (two mile) walk for any fitness level. A light snack will be provided at the end of each walk.
Walkers are asked to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes, bring along water, wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing, bring their Passport booklet and consult a physician if just starting a physical activity program. Each walk will have an experienced walking leader and support staff.
There is a $3 per walk registration fee, but the benefits are far greater than the cost. Regular brisk walking can lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes, or help you manage these conditions. Your risk of injuries is reduced, since walking is gentle to the joints and contributes to muscle and bone strength and balance.
Walking is also convenient you can walk almost every day in the spring and summer, and at area malls during colder months and fun, allowing you to walk and talk with family and friends. Best of all, it’s a healthy alternative to such unhealthy habits as excessive eating, smoking or living too sedentary a life.
This is what the Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo’s Passport to Wellness program is all about providing fun, safe and moderate physical activity for older adults, along with valuable health information and time to socialize.
