In Western New York, cancer is an all-too-common diagnosis. In fact, three out of four families in Western New York will be touched by cancer. The good news is that there is excellent medical care available here.
But one very important element missing from the cancer care continuum here in Western New York has been emotional and social support. Where could people touched by cancer go to talk to others going through the same thing? People who understood and knew what a cancer diagnosis means to the entire family? A place where you could laugh or cry, or just relax? At Gilda’s Club Western New York, a not-for-profit support community for men, women and children and their families and friends who have been touched by cancer. Located at 1140 Delaware Avenue in downtown Buffalo, Gilda’s Club serves the eight counties of Western New York.
“I knew if I became a member, my kids would also get to do things,” says Theresa, a mid-40s single mother with cancer. “I like that they have the opportunity to have fun and be around kids who are also going through what they’re going through. It’s been a positive experience for all of us.”
Membership is free and offers a homelike setting where members create their own plan for their involvement with Gilda’s Club, including support and networking groups, lectures, workshops, seminars and social activities.
“Gilda’s Club is a very special place, and I am grateful for it,” says Theresa. “The fact that it’s free to members is a big help.”

individuals, corporations and foundations to ensure it can remain free of charge to all members. In addition to its established fundraising initiatives, Gilda’s Club recently announced the Coin Box Project, a creative fundraising idea for all ages. Gilda’s Club produced 48,000 small boxes that each holds about $55 in coins and fit well on a dresser, a desk, a shop counter or even in the car. When the box is full, it can be dropped off at any M&T Bank branch. Dunbar Armored has generously agreed to count the collected coins, and new boxes can be picked up at any RealtyUSA office.
If you’d like more information about joining or volunteering, would like a coin box or wish to make a donation, please call 332-5900.
