After an arduous and enthusiastic preservation process, Clara’s House, located in the heart of Clarence, NY, will open its doors for the first time on October 6. Formerly the Magoffin home, this historic building was slated for demolition, but has been renewed as Clara’s House, to premier with a decorators’ showcase event and subsequent welcome center for Clarence Hollow. This project, led by Cathy Surianello, proprietor of Presentations Home Décor in Clarence, shines as a major accomplishment by a small group of town residents. The rooms have now been customized to reflect regional historic themes. The railroad room which will serve as an information station is a tribute to resident David Brace, dubbed “the little engine that could” for his determination in this preservation project. Artist Sherry Misso of Art ‘n Soul Studio led the way in Brace’s honor. The ultimate goal is to turn the house into a not-for-profit visitor center celebrating regional history, attractions and events. The Decorators’ Showcase will help to fund this effort.

Beginning with the opening event, Clara’s House will be available for groups or creative community uses and private events. Organizers have partnered with the Asa Ransom House to offer an afternoon tour and tea package for private parties.

Clara’s House provides offices for the Clarence Hollow Association and Farmers’ Market, with the ground floor to be made available to the community. The home will promote the town of Clarence as it prepares to celebrate its 2008 bicentennial. This will be an important event for all of Buffalo as Clarence was founded in 1808, and is the oldest town in Erie County.

For tickets and information to the Decorators’ Showcase call Presentations Home Décor, 9060 Main St., Clarence, at
565-3120. The event begins October 6 and continues through October 22. Admission is $12 or $10 for ten or more. Open Friday-Sunday, 12-4 p.m. and Friday evening from
6-9 p.m. Group tours, Mon.-Sat.
