Our Keepsakes

To a collector like me, the good old days are always here. Whether it’s furnishing a primitive-style room, completing a long-sought collection or remembering the old folks, it’s fun to dig for old treasures at flea markets, garage sales, antique stores or Ebay. It is particularly fun in the summer.

Collectors are out in droves in good weather and shops lie on almost every route. Open-air antiquing is my favorite. Yard sales bring objects swinging from branches and blankets of goods are spread on the neighbor’s lawn. Flea markets expand outside, seeming to double in size.

On Father’s Day my family and I visited Antique World in Clarence. It was a lively day of shopping under the breezy trees and walking the lanes and booths. It was sunny and friendly, and especially nice watching my 11-year-old digging through tables of goods and talking it up with the dealers. Her personal interests are developing and it was fun to watch. We talked about our favorites — mine being printed objects — fabric, photos and paper. Hers — old drawing supplies and comic books. Our collections grew that day.

As we left, my daughter asked when we could return again this summer so that we could spend the day together. These are the good old days.
