Anderson's Greatest Hits
The University at Buffalo Anderson Gallery offers selections from its permanent collection through August 5, including an interesting window into the contributions to the field of collecting made by Martha Jackson and her son, David K. Anderson. Selections on view will include works from artists like Joan Mitchell, Anton Tapiés, Michael Goldberg, and Sam Francis. It’s a perfect way to spend a day, at one of Buffalo’s premier galleries. The gallery is open from Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, from 1-5 p.m.

The BPO does Motown
The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra takes on some of the finest music of the sixties on June 8-9 with “A Motown Salute,” the finale to this season’s Pops lineup. The hit parade will feature the music of groups like the Four Tops and the Temptations, and performers such as Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson. Best of all, the evenings will feature Motown greats the Contours featuring Sylvester Potts. The group will perform hits of their own, as well as other Motown hits from the Miracles and Stevie Wonder.

50 Years of Allentown
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Allentown Art Festival, and it has been an illustrious and memorable five decades. Much has changed in the festival’s half century lifespan, especially the size — recent years have seen larger crowds and more vendors than ever before — but what remains unchanged is the event’s unique combination of fine art, good friends, and a bustling, exciting atmosphere. Scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 9-10, the festival is one again presented by the Allentown Village Society. The Society actually began in 1958, as well, when a resident named Jason Natowitz proposed an event to stimulate Allentown’s businesses. What started that year with about 50 local artists and craftsmen has expanded to more than 400 juried exhibitors and thousands of attendees. Community involvement has been key in this expansion. Local students at both the high school and college levels benefit from proceeds and scholarships, helping foster the next generation of art in Western New York. In addition to the artwork, the scholarships, and the focus on community, the Allentown Art Festival remains a great time. Whether you’re in the mood to buy some art, browse, people-watch, or just enjoy a June weekend outside, the festival is a Buffalo summer tradition, one well on its way to fifty more years.

Pick of the Crop
Pick of the Crop Dance presents an evening of dance, music, and visual art on June 22-23 at the Flickinger Theater, located on the Nichols School campus in Buffalo. The dance ensemble will perform two works. The first, Not Two and Not One, was originally commissioned by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in 1989, while the second, Double Blind, is a new collaboration between Pick of the Crop founder Elaine Gardner and dancer-choreographer Terry Beck. The performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. each night, with tickets available at the door for $15.
