Hope Inspires Annual Event
By Gail Nicholson
This month brings the annual Plant for Hope fundraiser for cancer research at Bedford’s Greenhouse. The event grew from one family’s personal experience with the disease.
Steve and Maryjo Bedford, of Bedford’s Greenhouse in Clarence, started Plant for Hope in 1999 with Maryjo’s sister Barbara Carafice-Vaccaro who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The family, including third sister Karen, decided to support cancer research by designing and selling an exclusive hanging basket filled with a bounty of pink impatiens. In 2003, other garden centers joined in. Today, the Plant for Hope basket is sold throughout Western New York.
Plant for Hope has become a successful one-day garden and craftshow.
In 2002, at age 42, Carafice-Vaccaro lost her battle with breast cancer. In her honor the plant sales and event continues to date raising $9,000 for the Susan G. Komen fund and $23,162 for Roswell Park.
Contribute by joining the family on May 19 for a day of fun including kids games, food, beverages, plants and a silent auction at Bedford’s Greenhouse, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
