Steve and Maryjo Bedford, of Bedford’s Greenhouse in Clarence, started Plant for Hope in 1999 with Maryjo’s sister Barbara Carafice-Vaccaro who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The family, including third sister Karen, decided to support cancer research by designing and selling an exclusive hanging basket filled with a bounty of pink impatiens. In 2003, other garden centers joined in. Today, the Plant for Hope basket is sold throughout Western New York. Plant for Hope has become a successful one-day garden and craftshow. In 2002, at age 42, Carafice-Vaccaro lost her battle with breast cancer. In her honor the plant sales and event continues — to date raising $9,000 for the Susan G. Komen fund and $23,162 for Roswell Park.
