Paradise in March

March often means more snow and cold weather, but it also means Paradise — Paradise Under Glass, that is. Schedule for March 13, this annual event at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens (2655 South Park Avenue) may be your best chance at bringing the memories of summer back to life before, say, June.

Attendees are offered a chance to break away from the cold and enter the Gardens’ stunning tropical paradise. Tropical attire is encouraged but not required, but why pass up the chance to show off your best Hawaiian shirt? With friends, great music, cold beer, fine wine and the dazzling displays of nature, winter in Buffalo takes on a new aspect.

Tickets are available presale for $25 and at the door for $30. With each ticket guests will receive a sneak preview of the 2008 Spring Flower Show, beer, wine, music and food. Paradise Under Glass is brought to you by the Gardens and the Paradise Under Glass Committee, a collection of young professionals from an assortment of fields throughout Western New York; proceeds will benefit the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Society, Inc., a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to encourage people to accept the enduring harmony between people and the natural world. For tickets or more information, visit www.buffalogardens.com or call 827-1584, extension 203.

The Gardens is busy throughout March. Another installment in its volunteer lecture series is scheduled for March 11: Don Sessions will discuss shrub gardens through the seasons. Other March events include “Shakespeare and His Love of Horticulture” on March 9; a ceramics exhibit featuring Buffalo State student Chanda Glendinning’s senior show from March 15–April 13 (her work will also appear at Paradise Under Glass, along with an art exhibit and autograph session from artist Michael Morgulis); guided tours of the Gardens on March 15; an Easter egg hunt on March 22; and Literacy in Bloom, a day of stories and celebration, also on March 22.

March is also the month of Plantasia 2008: A Carnival of Color, from March 27–30 at the Hamburg Fairgrounds. Featuring theme gardens, markets, seminars, and more, Plantasia is a unique event in the gardening world. Visit www.plantasiany.com or call 741-8047 for info.
