A New Winter Classic
Ice Bowl, Winter Classic …

Whatever you want to call it, ring in the New Year by rooting for the Buffalo Sabres as they participate in the first regular-season outdoor game in the United States, playing against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Winter Classic. Of course, you’ll be ringing in the New Year thirteen hours late, as the game doesn’t commence until 1 p.m. on January 1, but it’ll be worth it, as 73,000-plus fans are expected to fill Ralph Wilson Stadium. If you don’t have tickets yet, good luck; if you can’t pony up enough cash to pay the extravagant eBay prices, then hit the easy chair, eat some holiday leftovers, drink some beer, and watch the game on NBC for free.

Oates’s View of the Falls
Lockport-born award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates has written everything from Gothic horror and children’s fiction to novellas and plays throughout her 45-year career. Today, she mostly focuses on novels, and the Amherst Museum Book Club will be discussing her 2004 novel The Falls on January 23. The book has a strong local link; it documents a woman’s life before and after her husband throws himself over Niagara Falls.

“Springtime” at UB
Springtime comes early this year, as Mel Brooks’s Tony Award record-holding comedic musical The Producers comes to Buffalo for only one weekend, January 25–26 at University at Buffalo’s Center For the Arts. This must-see Broadway smash won 12 Tony Awards in 2001, and seven years later audiences remain enthralled by the story of two con-men who attempt to cheat theater investors out of money — but who fail miserably as their expected flop becomes a success. Show times are Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., call 645-ARTS to buy your tickets.
